Eco-friendly Fabrics
Everyday you are surrounded by fabrics whether it’s on your couches, car seats, the bed sheets that you sleep in every night, or the clothes that you wear. Fabric is around us all the time but Kyla Kleaning bets that you’ve never thought that there are eco-friendly and non eco-friendly types of fabrics to have?
Not long ago, even just a few decades ago people only used natural fabrics made from wool, cashmere, cotton, silk, linen, and hemp. However, if you looked at what you have in your closet today you would be most likely to find materials like rayon, polyester, acrylic, acetate and nylon. Not only that but I bet you’ve purchased something that is wrinkle-free or stain resistent.
These technological advances have us all looking a lot better but at what cost to the environment?
Did you know? Natural and synthetic fabrics that have been chemically treated are a source of toxins that adversly affect your health and the health of our planet.
But luckily for you Kyla Kleaning has a list of fabrics to avoid and eco-friendly fabrics to pick instead!
Toxic Fabrics:
– Polyester
– Acrylic
– Rayon
– Acetate and Triacetate
– Nylon
Also, avoid anything static resistant, stain resistant, permanent press, wrinkle-free or stain proof because many of these products are treated with perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs), like Teflon.
In today’s world many fabrics (including natural fibers) are treated with chemicals at some point during their processing. Still, some choices are better than others.
When you can, look for natural fibers like cotton, silk, linen, hemp or wool. Also, remember to try and avoid chemical dry cleaning and wash your clothes in a “green” detergent.
